Oilers Puck Display

Oilers Puck Display

For my sister to show off her collection

Made this on request from my sister who has had these pucks for many years and wanted a way to display them. The concept and design were simple enough. A big piece of wood cut into a circle with smaller circles cut out.

The execution, however, ended up being much more complicated. First I glued together 2 circles of 1/2″ baltic birch and routed the edge to round it off. Then I measured to figure out where to place the holes. These holes had to be cut out. That’s where it got problematic. I didn’t want to just freehand scrollsaw them as I wanted a nice, perfect circle and that can be difficult to do freehand. I had acquired a 3″ forstner bit for free so I thought that would be perfect since pucks are 3″ in diameter. Said forstner bit though was entirely useless at actually cutting holes. I ended up cutting most of the hole out with the scrollsaw, drilling into the hole as much as I could with the bit to make clean edges, then using my Dremel with a tiny sanding drum to sand the inside edges to the proper diameter. I was super messy and difficult to get exact dimensions. I used a puck to constantly check to make sure it would fit without being too loose or too tight.

After that nightmare, it wasn’t so bad. I made a backing piece from 1/8″ baltic birch and drilled holes into it so that the pucks can easily be removed from the backside if so needed. I stained the whole piece with a royal blue paint/stain. I had cut a hole in the middle of the piece to add the logo which I printed on photo paper and glued onto a piece of wood in the middle to raise it slightly. As a finishing touch, I poured a bit of clear resin on top of the logo.

I’m very happy with the final result and I hope my sister enjoys seeing her pucks on display as they should be.
