Trying out a new method
Previously I used a sheet of plexiglass ($$$) for the backing, but the price of plexiglass is getting out of control. Also, the plexiglass is consumed: it becomes a permanent part of the final product and can’t be reused.
For this project I tried a 2′ x 4′ (60 x 120cm) sheet of polypropylene to form a temporary backing which can be removed and reused when the piece is complete. The polypropylene cost less than a sheet of plexiglass of the same size. More importantly, I can reuse it over and over again, so it helps my wallet and the environment.
As you can see in this video, I still have some room for improvement. I was not pleased with the way the tape adhered to the wood, but I have some ideas to improve this process even further.
